Being seen in 2026: the machine behind the visibility

Sonntagsausgabe 05 — Being seen in 2026: the machine behind the visibility
🎧 Listen to this post

The question came up in the middle of the work, and it may be the most important one of this entire series: What does it actually take today to be noticed in the market?

I can answer it because I built the answer over the past five weeks — completely, on my own example, alongside the actual work. This Sonntagsausgabe — the Sunday long-read — is the survey: what belongs to it, what it costs, and which parts would simply be out of reach without AI agents.

The result up front: visibility is not a channel you serve well. It is a small machine made of five parts that mesh together. If one is missing, the others run below their worth.

Part 1: Owned — what nobody can take from you

The foundation is the surfaces you own: the website with a real narrative instead of a brochure. The blog as the place for substance — texts you will still want to link to in a year. The newsletter with your own address list, double opt-in, exportable at any time. The RSS feed for those who decide for themselves what they subscribe to. And, recently, a news section for short updates in between.

Why first? Because everything else is borrowed. Reach on a platform can be halved tomorrow — the algorithm changes, the account gets suspended, the platform dies. Your own list, your own domain, your own archive: those stay. Every spoke of this machine therefore points back to the hub, never the other way around.

Part 2: Social — borrowed reach, borrowed deliberately

Four channels, four different ownership models, deliberately tiered:

LinkedIn is unavoidable for a B2B company in Switzerland — that is where the decision-makers are. So it gets served professionally: one teaser per blog post on publication day, scheduled in advance, answered by hand. But it remains what it is: rented reach under someone else’s rules.

Bluesky is the interesting middle ground: an open protocol where your own domain is your username. We are not @something1234 there — we go by the same name as our website. The proof of identity lives in the protocol, not in a purchased checkmark.

The Fediverse is the most consistent tier: we do not have an account on a platform there. We run our own node of the network, on our own infrastructure, under our own address. Ownership in social media does not get more radical than that.

And Facebook, Instagram, TikTok? Deliberately not. Not on principle, but by calculation: this company’s audience makes no business decisions there, and every channel costs upkeep. A machine does not get better by bolting on parts that drive nothing.

Part 3: Found — being found, redefined

Search engine optimization remains table stakes: clean structure, fast pages, sitemap, the craft. But the new discipline goes by a different name: getting cited by AI assistants. More and more people no longer ask the search engine but their assistant — and the assistant cites pages that are citable: clear statements, traceable reasoning, sources, authorship. The friendly side effect: what makes answer engines cite you also makes texts better for humans. This series is written that way.

Part 4: Proof — the work is the portfolio

The part that gets underestimated the most. References and certificates assert; publicly traceable work proves. Hence build in public: the decisions of this rebuild are out in the open, the failures too (part 2 was a security hole), and the code, where possible, as well. Anyone who wants to check whether this company can do what it promises can simply read up on it.

Trust-building only works honestly: whoever publishes only successes publishes advertising — and readers smell that from the first paragraph.

Part 5: Feedback — measuring without surveilling

Without feedback, the machine is blind. With surveillance, it contradicts everything this brand stands for. The third way has been running for five weeks: cookie-less, self-hosted counting plus campaign discipline — every teaser, every newsletter link carries a tag, and in the morning the agent pulls the numbers through the API: which channel brought readers yesterday? Which ones stayed? (Why that works without a cookie banner was Thursday’s post.)

The honest bill

What this machine costs a solo founder, in real numbers: the build — website narrative, blog including read-aloud, newsletter, three social channels including our own Fediverse instance, measurement — was scattered evenings and weekend hours over five weeks, roughly one full working week gross. The operation: server costs in the low double digits of Swiss francs per month, plus an ongoing two to four hours per week for writing — the only line item that does not shrink.

And the decisive footnote: without agents, this would have been a project for an agency plus an internal team. Not because the individual pieces are hard — but because there are so many of them. The agent built templates, configured channels, wired up feeds, generated covers, turned texts into audio. Building the machine yourself has become economical. That changes who gets to be visible.

The Sunday question

If you check your own visibility against these five parts — Owned, Social, Found, Proof, Feedback — which part is missing entirely for you? And if the answer is “Owned”: how much of your reach do you actually still own?

And what does the whole thing look like? For anyone who would rather see the machine in front of them, this text has an appendix: the technical drawing — a single figure showing how Owned, Social, Found, Proof and Feedback mesh into one closed loop. No computer science degree required, promised.

The Sonntagsausgabe appears every Sunday. Next week: six weeks of rebuilding in numbers — the honest balance sheet.
